Building a Period Correct Gas Station Sign Mount
This time at the Quick Speed Shop I need to build a period correct sign mount post for my Richfield backyard gas station building. This is an original 60" porcelain enamel sign, circa 1940s-1950s. I built a replica gas station in the backyard and this sign will be displayed next to it. I made a base out of riveted pipe and concrete to mount the pole. The sign will stand about 15 ft tall when completed.

Edison Portland Cement Company Sign: Is this the only sign left in existence?

This time at the Quick Speed Shop it's another Neat Old Stuff video here and this one is good one. Thomas A. Edison started the Edison Portland Cement Company in 1899 and the company sold portland cement and concrete. This video could not have been posted at a better time for me. I've got a two ft. one sided Texaco Gas Station sign. That I'm going to put close to the corner of my shop. The way I'm doing mine is similar to you. I'm going to use something that is most likely in the driveway at a lot of houses. A basketball pole that has the plastic base on it that I got for free. I'll just use the pole which is about 8 or 9 feet tall . Then I'll make a bracket that will hold the sign and weld the bracket to the pole. And the whole thing will be attached to a T-post that's already driven into the ground. I also have a green angled porcelain light that I'm thinking about putting on top. It will only be there for looks.

    Question. When i removed the cab side line to the retaining clip ripped out. Which way do the legs face? The line or the filter. Also where are the orings. I haven’t looked hard but are they back in the narrow part of the fitting. Thanks

    • @QuickSpeedShop
      @QuickSpeedShop 3 години тому

      The o rings are in the fittings on the fuel lines. The retaining clip, the roundish part clips around the line and the longer part with the teeth hangs over the end of the fitting, facing the filter.

    If you decide to part with your sign ,may i suggest ,offer it for trade,not for sale ,see what you are offered,it has historical value,way beyond that of just another sign,the Edison name on it puts it into a museum quality piece,the few chips do not devalue a piece of history like you have,it would be nice if some billionaire would offer it to a NEWJERSY museum for a tax write off,and give you a gift of ??????.??-for it .-the billionaire could have his or her name go down in history as the donner just for some loose change he or she may have laying around . Six figures would be nice-pocket change to some---don’t undersell this treasure---p---

      That'd be nice, but it looks like a couple have surfaced for sale within the last couple of years and they only brought between $500 and $1100. Besides, I'm keeping it for my collection. I wonder if these were installed on the concrete houses since several have surfaced now.

      @@QuickSpeedShop thanks for your response. I went to check out your AA wrecker videos. The wrecker looks great! I have been drooling over these for about 10 years! All the ones I see for sale or a few thousand dollars and five states away. What is hard to figure out from photos is the size of the angle iron and the thickness of the metal plate on the original. Could you give me those measurements please?

      I know, I looked up the history. It looks like there are a couple of these signs out there. Maybe they mounted them on the houses? I don't know. The Portland Cement Company went bankrupt in 1931. A portion of it lived on until 1942 pouring concrete roads.

      It's a T-10 4 speed. It's probably a wide ratio with something like 2.6 1st gear. That combined with 2.79 rear gears makes it not very conducive to low rpm cruising. I'm pulling out the 4 speed and swapping in a Powerglide for a couple of reasons, this is one of them.

      @@QuickSpeedShop There is a flexible hex head screwdriver that fits through the window in the cap. Crank the engine without starting and adjust the dwell to 30 degrees. Oh you also need an old school dwell meter. I threw mine away. I had a 62 Buick LeSabre with 401, 2V. I once swapped the water pump and had the core returned to the auto parts in 20 minutes. I replaced the left motor mount in the parking lot using 2x4 and revving the engine. Rebuilt the carb. Replaced the fuel pump with an electric one. The transmission was rebuilt by a shop. The cam gear disintegrated at 55 mph because it was nylon coated. Checked the rotor and it was not turning when I cranked the engine. The engine had dual valve springs and pop up pistons. The engine started overheating after the cam gear issue. I tore the engine apart without finding the cause and sold it. Found out it had a bent push rod when the piston hit a valve. Paid $650 for it in 1969. I have the battle scars from that engine.
